How it was done… Part two

Ok so last post I went over how to remove blemishes and have the models skin looking great. This time we will be talking about how to enhance small features without over doing it. The photo of this model in particular, has an unwanted scar on her chin which I will break down how it was removed.

What you’ll need:

Liquify Tool- This tool allows you to manipulate your photo as well as enhance it.

Stamp tool- This tool will allow you to keep the same texture of the whatever you want, yet allow you to control where you want to affect.

* You will need to use the blemish tools I spoke of in the last post as well.

Implementing your tools:

So by now we have a majority of the skin cleared up and can now move on to the more difficult parts. First off anything that is on the edge of two different areas can be tricky to edit. Reason being is that you can’t just jump in and take your blemish tools and expect it to remove the scar yet keep the defined edge of your object (in our case the jaw). What you wanna do first is take your Patch Tool and select around the scar leaving about a half inch gap from the jaw line. If you get too close to the edge you’ll see the two areas blur together which you obviously don’t want. If that happens just go back in your history and reselect until you remove most of the scar.

When most of the scar is removed take Stamp Tool and sample the area (alt+click) either to the left or right of where the scar was then with a soft brush, start lightly laying down your sampled texture where the jaw line is. Careful not to go over the edge of the jaw line. If you accidentally go over the edge, DO NOT TRY ERASING IT. If you try erasing your mistakes chances are it will leave problems behind. Instead just go back in your history before the mistake and continue.

After the scar is completely corrected and not visible you will see the tiny indent that is left behind from the scar being there. This is where Liquify Tool comes into play. Go to Filter > Liquify, then take the   tool and make your selection size a about 20% larger than the indent and have your brush pressure set to about 50. Now that everything’s all set up start with the inside of the indent and slowly start pushing the skin outwards until it is flush with the rest of the jaw.

The scar is now successfully removed and now you can lightly enhance the photo which will bring out the models features a little bit more. Still using Liquify Tool, choose  and make your brush pressure about 20. Click each side of the lips once to enhance them slightly as well as each eye. These are obviously optional, but if used correctly can add a great flare to any photo.

We are almost finished, but on the next post we will discuss how to enhance the lighting of the photo.

How it was done…

After

Before

For all of my readers who want to know how I edit my photos, well here you go! I’ve chosen to take the time to write 3 posts over the next 2 weeks, talking in detail about how this photo was retouched. I’ll take you step by step through the process and break down all the fine details you might overlook when your editing. I hope to inspire you and help you take that next step in becoming better at editing your work.

This first post is going to discuss how I went through retouching her skin. There isn’t very many blemishes, which I recommend you open both images to compare, and with any blemishes there’s two tools you will need to complete the task.

What you’ll need:

Spot Healing Brush Tool- Use this tool to remove any small blemishes or little marks that prevent the skin from being smooth.
Patch Tool- This tool is one of the strongest tools in photoshop for retouching if you know how to use it correctly. Use this tool to remove unwanted blemishes that are on a larger scale such as scars, bags under eyes, etc.

Implementing your tools:

Now that you have both of the tools you’ll need to retouch the skin let me explain a little bit of how the skin was retouched. First I went through and removed any small blemishes with the Spot Healing Brush Tool, on the whole body, making sure not to remove any texture of the skin. After getting rid of the small blemishes I picked up my Patch Tool and began removing larger blemishes such as random shadows between the eyebrows and the faint scar on the bottom of the chin. When it comes to removing blemishes that are near the end of the face, you can do two things. Either try your Patch Tool and get as close to the edge as you can or use your Clone Stamp Tool. Sample the clear skin right next to the scar then click over the scar to begin removing it. You will need to use a soft blurred brush when using the Clone Stamp Tool so that it meshes with the surrounding skin seamlessly. It’s a tedious process editing skin, but you will get the hang of it over time.

Now that you managed to clear up the skin of your subject, i’m hoping, you are now ready for the next step in the process.

In my next post I will be discussing how to tidy up the jaw line and enhance some features with the Liquify Tool.

Shoot with Julianne Hatfield

The other day I had the please of shooting with Julianne Hatfield, an up-coming model. I had chosen to shoot at Mt. Charleston because I wanted the trees and natural landscape to give the photos almost a “dreamy” feel.  Once we arrived  at the location, while unpacking I managed to take a snap shot of the mountain because I loved how the light was gleaming through between two rock formations.

After taking a treacherous hike up the mountain with my equipment that only seems to be getting heavier, we started to set up for the shoot. I had managed to find an awesome location where a few trees had been pulled out of the ground from the heavy snow fall. I took a “behind the scenes” photo while Audrey, my make-up artist, was helping Julianne position herself before we began shooting. I like how the photo almost looked like it could be a really cool movie scene, but maybe thats just me!

Once the shooting began everything started to come together. Although the snow made it really difficult to move around and froze us by the end, I’m happy with though outcome and it was a fun experience.
